Will a Flu Shot Prevent Pleurisy?

Ask the experts

I have had pleurisy three times in the last three months. Will a flu shot help my situation?

Doctor's response

Pleurisy involves inflammation of the lining of the chest cavity. This can be seen with anything that causes irritation of the pleura. The flu vaccine is more specific for infections with influenza A and influenza B viruses. These viral infections are not particularly associated with the development of pleurisy. Although it is good to get a flu vaccine annually, this will most likely not prevent the development of pleurisy.
