Cisapride is a medication used to treat heartburn in people with gastroesophageal reflux disease. Because of its potential side effects, cisapride should only be used under the supervision of a doctor, when all other medications have failed.

What is cisapride?

Cisapride is a gastroprokinetic drug, which improves the motility of the upper gastrointestinal tract and is used to treat constipation. The drug has been banned since August 2000. 

  • Many countries have limited the usage of cisapride due to its various side effects.
  • There are many other alternatives and safe medications that work similarly to cisapride.

How is cisapride taken?

Cisapride is taken orally on an empty stomach at least 15 minutes before eating and bedtime.

Inform your pediatrician before giving it to children. Special care has to be taken when cisapride is given to children.

Take cisapride as directed by your doctor. If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is close to the time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and take it at the next scheduled time, then resume your regular dosing schedule.

It is advised to take ECG and renal function tests before taking this medication.
