Vasculitis refers to a group of uncommon diseases characterized by an inflammation of blood vessels due to any cause.
Signs and symptoms associated with many causes of vasculitis include
- fever,
- weight loss,
- body aches,
- fatigue,
- night sweats, and
- headache.
Other associated symptoms and signs depend on the exact cause of vasculitis and can include
- numbness or weakness,
- skin rash,
- skin discoloration,
- confusion,
- seizures,
- lightheadedness,
- muscle pain,
- cough,
- shortness of breath, and
- kidney failure.
Causes of vasculitis
An autoimmune reaction, infection involving a blood vessel wall, or an allergic-type reaction to toxins or medications can cause vasculitis. There are many different causes of vasculitis. Examples of diseases associated with vasculitis include temporal arteritis, Kawasaki disease, polyarteritis nodosa, Churg-Strauss syndrome, and Henoch-Schönlein purpura.
