Are there any new developments for treatment of achalasia?
The editors are not aware of any new treatments for achalasia. The latest one is the Botox treatment that you mention which, unfortunately, often gives only temporary relief. Some improvement can be obtained with use of oral drugs such as Nifedipine or other calcium channel blockers or various nitroglycerine products. The standard treatments still are pneumatic dilatation (a sudden blowing up of a balloon within the esophagus so that it tears some of the muscle fibers) or surgery.
