An abscess often is raised and may feel warm and painful to the touch. The Nemours Foundation advises against popping, pushing, squeezing or touching an abscess. You can apply a warm compress to the area, which may help open and drain the wound.
While many abscesses can be treated at home, some may require a doctor's care. Nemours suggests monitoring for signs of a more serious infection:
- The abscess becomes painful, red and swollen.
- Red streaks appear near the infected area.
- You have significant pain or discomfort.
- You have chills or a fever.
