- Check with your doctor before you take any drug, in particular for cough, constipation, diarrhea, nausea or congestion.
- Be especially wary of drug use during the first trimester of pregnancy, when the fetus is at greatest risk of acquiring developmental problems.
- Do not use aspirin or other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Acetaminophen (Tylenol), however, is typically safe for occasional use.
- Avoid medications labeled "long-acting" or "maximum/extra strength," as well as combination medications that treat multiple symptoms.
