(HealthDay News) -- Sponges may be a handy way to wipe up messes in the kitchen, but they can also spread germs.
The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics offers this advice for safer kitchen sponges:
- Don't use a sponge to wipe up spilled juices from meat. Instead, opt for a paper towel or antibacterial wipe.
- Don't clean countertops with a sponge. Clean them with disinfecting wipes or paper towels.
- If you use a dishcloth, be sure to wash frequently in very hot water and dry in the dryer's hot setting.
- Replace sponge frequently. If it starts to smell, throw it away.
