As a follow-up to our previous Health Fact, here are facts published in the New England Journal of Medicine (1997).
- At any age, smokers have 40% greater Health Care related costs as compared to non-smokers.
- Life expectancy for smokers is 69.7 yrs for men, and 75.6 yrs for women; for non-smokers the figures are 77.0 and 81.6 yrs.
- At age 70, 78 % of non-smokers are alive compared to 57 % of smokers.
If everyone were to quit smoking, costs would initially decrease, but would eventually rise because of the costs related to taking care of an older population!
So those who smoke are actually saving the country Health Care costs, by dying early!
