The American Academy of Dermatology offers this list of possible causes:
- A reaction to a food; common examples include chocolate, nuts, eggs, milk, berries, shellfish or tomatoes.
- An insect bite.
- A reaction to a prescription or over-the-counter medication, commonly antibiotics, pain-relievers, vitamins or herbs, arthritis drugs or antacids.
- A bacterial, viral or fungal infection.
- Exposure to the sun or extreme temperature, water or pressure on the skin.
- Scratching the skin.
