How long does it take to recover from an ectopic pregnancy?

Doctor's response

The recovery period from ectopic pregnancy is different for each woman affected. In most cases, the woman gets discharged home from the hospital the same day. She then needs to have a blood test weekly until beta hCG levels (which are elevated when pregnancy tissues is present) are verified to turn negative. Other than future reproductive complications experienced by some women, there should be no long-term consequences of ectopic pregnancy. In other words, although there are clearly difficult emotional issues for many women who are treated for ectopic pregnancy, within a few weeks most women will feel physically pretty much back to normal. Different women have different recovery times. Because ectopic pregnancy results in infertility in up to 50% of women, and repeat ectopic pregnancy in almost 20% of women, women with ectopic pregnancy should seek early prenatal care at the first suspicion of future pregnancy, to confirm and monitor healthy (non-ectopic) pregnancy.
