Prader-Willi syndrome is a complex genetic condition that affects many different areas of the body and functions.
Signs and symptoms of Prader-Willi syndrome include
- mild to moderate intellectual impairment and
- learning disabilities.
Behavioral problems are common, including
- temper tantrums,
- stubbornness,
- aggression, and
- compulsive behavior.
Many of those affected also have sleep problems. Other symptoms can include
- distinctive facial features,
- short stature, and
- small hands and feet.
Most affected people are infertile.
Causes of Prader-Willi syndrome
The loss of genes in a specific region of chromosome 15 from the paternal copy (the gene that was inherited from the father) causes Prader-Willi syndrome. However, most cases of Prader-Willi syndrome are not inherited. Instead, the genetic changes occur as random events during the formation of reproductive cells (eggs and sperm) or in early embryonic development.
