Ask the experts
Do the hormones released when breastfeeding have any effect on possible miscarriage in a successive pregnancy - in particular if the patient has had a previous miscarriage?
Doctor's response
There is no evidence to suggest that the hormones released during lactation would cause miscarriage with a subsequent on going pregnancy.
The hormones that are produced may cause some uterine cramping, and a patient with a previous poor pregnancy history may consider stopping if she has concerns when feeling the cramping.
