Graves' disease. Graves' disease is an autoimmune disease in which your thyroid works harder than it needs to (hyperthyroidism). Some patients develop thyroid eye disease in which their eye muscles and tissues swell, causing the eyes to protrude from their sockets (exophthalmos).
