DOCTOR'S VIEWS ARCHIVE
Topic: Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), June 2000
Dr. Lee:
A 50 year old sufferer of IBS was told by her doctor about a new drug
called fedotazine, a 5-H7 receptor antagonist. What is fedotazine? Do you know any clinical trials she can participate
in?
Dr. Marks:
Fedotazine, like alosetron , works via
neurotransmitters, but in the case of fedotazine, it works on a different neurotransmitter, one referred to as
an opioid neurotransmitter. Moreover, fedotazine strengthens the effects of the
neurotransmitter on nerves in contrast to alosetron, which blocks the effects. Fedotazine is being
studied in irritable bowel, but it has not been approved for use by the FDA in the US. I am not aware of
studies at the present time with irritable bowel and fedotazine. It would really depend on what part of the country the viewer is in
as to whether participation would be practical or not.
