How do ovarian cysts develop?

Every month one ovary releases an egg for possible fertilization. If the egg is not fertilized, the lining of the uterus is shed later on, a process experienced as a menstrual period. Ovulation leads to formation of ovarian cysts. More than one ovarian cyst would not be expected to form in any one month.
