My ophthalmologist put me on valacyclovir 1 gram tablet every 12 hours for ten days at the onset of suspect symptoms of herpes zoster ophthalmicus. Until now I have never had an outbreak. As I've never had chickenpox when I was a child (active immunity), I do have passive immunity thanks to my dad who had shingles. Immunity came in quite handy as I am a (retired) bedside nurse.
