Patient Comments: Gilbert Syndrome - Treatment

What was the treatment for your Gilbert syndrome?

Comment from: duarte, 35-44 Male (Patient) Published: November 13

As I was growing I used to get liver pain, yellow eyes, and tired every time I had jaundice. My granny used to give me local medicine and keep me on diet, I had jaundice at least 8 times, since I was very fond of fatty foods, chocolates, cakes, and oily food. When I was an adult I fell very sick, for almost a year I did not know what was going wrong. I tried all the best medicines for jaundice, but only later did I discover I had Gilbert syndrome. Best medicine is to follow a healthy diet, eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, juices, and avoid oily products and fatty foods. Exercise regularly and stay fit. Don't lose hope.

I am 61 years. My gastroenterologist told me I have Gilbert syndrome. I am having hepatitis Ag for the last 24 years. The same doctor is in constant touch with me who is renowned in my city. My bilirubin is always high, like 2, sometimes 2.5, recently it went up to 3. My doctor told me not to worry and given supplement tablets for liver. He says not to worry. I trust my doctor.

It is utterly ridiculous for doctors to say, that Gilbert syndrome is harmless! I can categorically state, that it has a profound effect on your life, and it"s limitations on your body, and especially on endurance levels! It gets worse as you get older. The best cure is decent sleep, good diet, and lots of liquid (water) - hydration is a problem. I am unable to drink alcohol, period... makes me extremely ill! Oh, stress is another major factor.

It is the second year since I spotted the symptoms of Gilbert syndrome. Yes, I have right side abdominal pain (annoying), and sometimes dizziness (very annoying). It appears as stressful situations happen (exams!) or if I'm exhausted (local inn with 2 hours of sleep afterwards). I have no loss of concentration, not really. Memory problems yes, with the things I don't care about. Feeling tired on daily basis I read as laziness. Solution I think is not to blame the syndrome for my life problems or lack of ambition.

I often feel tired and lack concentration because of Gilbert syndrome. The boss says get over it and get back to work. Welcome to the way it is!

My doctor told me to avoid acetaminophen and all alcohol and that I probably had Gilbert syndrome, but I don't see anywhere else that this is suggested.

I was told by doctors that I should not bother doing anything and was not given any suggestions of treatment. I can"t believe how many others have symptoms like tiredness and problems with concentration, I feel sick after only one standard alcoholic drink. I have been diagnosed with Gilbert syndrome recently when in hospital for a serious kidney infection. My eyes and skin went quite yellow after being in hospital a few days and my bilirubin levels where high on tests, I was eventually diagnosed after a couple of days. I"m wondering if there is anything that can be done besides perhaps taking liver detox vitamins. I have had digestion issues my whole life, I also have many allergies and get eczema if I have oranges or dairy products. I also often have low vitamin B and D levels and feel more fatigued if I have not taken a supplement for a few days. My parents are both Finnish and have high bilirubin levels also. Since I was diagnosed I have been speaking to my other Finnish relatives and I think many of them may also have Gilbert syndrome.
