Cause of esophageal cancer

Doctors don't understand the exact cause of esophageal cancer, but there are risk factors for developing the condition that include smoking, older age, male sex, dietary factors, excessive alcohol consumption, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), previous damage to the esophagus, and a precancerous condition known as Barrett's esophagus.
