As a result, more than 600 physicians and all nine hospitals in the county are providing free care to qualified individuals which has totaled, thus far, more than $16 million in donated health care. Scott served for a month as a volunteer surgeon aboard the USNS Mercy in providing medical relief for survivors of the Tsunami in Northern Sumatra, Indonesia. In September, 2005, he served as a volunteer physician in Mississippi, aiding victims of hurricane Katrina and in 2007, he went to Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands where he treated native people of those countries. In 2011, he operated on the USNS Comfort with the U.S. Navy Continuing Promise operation in El Salvador and Costa Rica. In 2009 and 2011, Dr. Leckman led groups of Utah Rotarians to India to participate in immunizing children against polio. In March of 2011, Dr. Leckman and three surgeons from the European Union travelled to Owerri, Nigeria to teach Nigerian surgeons the repair of hernias with mesh using mosquito net. Dr. Leckman is an active member of the following organizations: American College of Surgeons American Society of General Surgeons American Society of Breast Diseases American Hernia Society American Medical Association Utah Medical Association, past President Southwestern Surgical Congress Salt Lake Surgical Society, past President Dr. Leckman is Chairman of the Board of Directors of RESULTS and the RESULTS Educational Fund, organizations dedicated to creating the political will to end the worst aspects of poverty.
