Dr. Ginsberg was raised in Denver, Colorado. He received his B.A. degree with High Honors and Distinction in Chemistry from Wesleyan University (1961). He was a Fulbright scholar in chemistry at the University of Freiburg, Germany (1961-2). He received his M.D. degree cum laude from Harvard Medical School (1966). He was an intern and resident in Internal Medicine on the Harvard Medical Services of Boston City Hospital, and he trained in neurology at Massachusetts General Hospital. He served as a Staff Associate in the Laboratory of Perinatal Physiology at NIH, under Dr. Ronald Myers (1970-72). From 1973 through 1979, he was Assistant Professor and Associate Professor of Neurology at the University of Pennsylvania and a member of Martin Reivich's Cerebrovascular Research Center. In 1979, Dr. Ginsberg moved to Miami to join Peritz Scheinberg's Department of Neurology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Dr. Ginsberg currently holds the Peritz Scheinberg Endowed Chair in Neurology and serves as Professor of Neurology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, and Attending Neurologist at Jackson Memorial Hospital. From 1981 until 2005, Dr. Ginsberg served as Director of the Cerebral Vascular Disease Research Center at the University of Miami – an NIH-funded multidisciplinary research group concerned with the pathophysiology and treatment of ischemic cerebrovascular disorders. He was also the founding Director of the NIH-funded Clinical Neurotrauma Research Center at the University of Miami. Dr. Ginsberg served as Chairman of Neurological Disorders Program Project Review A Committee, NIH; and was a member of the National Research Committee of the American Heart Association. He has been the recipient of an Established Investigatorship of the American Heart Association, and a Jacob Javits Neuroscience Investigator Award of the NIH. In 2002, he received the Thomas Willis Award of the American Stroke Association, and in 2003 was honored as a founding Distinguished Scientist of the American Heart Association. In 2004, he received the Distinguished Faculty Scholar Award of the University of Miami. From 1991-1997 he was Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Cerebral Blood Flow and Metabolism. He is the author of approximately 300 manuscripts and 45 chapters. Dr. Ginsberg currently serves as Principal Investigator of a major NIH-funded multicenter randomized clinical trial – the ALIAS [Albumin in Acute Stroke] Phase III Trial – a double-blind placebo-controlled trial being conducted at approximately 80 North American clinical sites to establish the neuroprotective efficacy of high-dose human albumin therapy for acute ischemic stroke. This 5-year study is funded by the National Institutes of Health.
