Overview

I discovered a love for the humanities early in life due to the profound way in which they helped me to understand and appreciate the human condition. My interactions with patients tend to be relational and existentially-oriented, focusing heavily on personal growth and empowerment within a larger context of meaning and values.
Some of my current interests include existential psychotherapy, professional/relational coaching, leadership/executive development, and the delivery of healthcare via digital telemedicine services. I have an extensive background in research, speaking, and publishing, having trained at Mayo Clinic, Harvard, Vanderbilt, University of Washington, and Seattle Psychoanalytic Institute and receiving full-ride academic scholarships for my undergrad and medical education.

At UW, I served as chief resident and graduated with distinction in advanced psychotherapy. Currently, I serve as clinical faculty at UW training medical residents in psychotherapy. Please see my website to learn more about my practice. I look forward to hearing from you.

WebMD Spotlight
WebMD Spoke with Dr. Zacharias about a few relevant health topics.

What is the experience like for patients that visit your office?
"The first session will be a comprehensive mental health evaluation, which includes gathering relevant psychiatric and medical histories in order to understand your current symptoms and concerns. This preliminary assessment will provide the basis for diagnostic clarification and treatment planning moving forward. It will also allow us to develop rapport, discuss procedures and policies, and determine whether or not it makes sense to proceed with treatment.
Thereafter, I typically meet with individuals either for 50-minute psychotherapy sessions with or without medication management (varying in frequency from weekly to once every several weeks) or medication management sessions which are less frequent and about half an hour. If I recommend alternative or additional treatments that I currently do not offer, I can provide referrals to appropriate providers.

Though my practice is informed by psychoanalytic and "third wave" cognitive-behavioral theory, my interactions with patients tend to be relational and existentially-oriented, focusing heavily on personal growth and empowerment within a larger context of meaning and values. I am open to discuss the need for psychotropic medication or referral for other treatment modalities when appropriate and useful. I do not demand a specific approach as long as the chosen path is indicated, evidence-based, likely to be tolerable and effective, and something upon which we mutually agree. The goal is to deliver the care a patient wants and needs, when they want and need it.

The word psychiatry derives from Greek meaning “healing of the spirit”—it is my aim to achieve that end."

Can you describe how your team interacts with patients?
My interpersonal therapeutic style is characterized by spirited dialogue, philosophical exploration, playful sparring of ideas, openness, and vulnerability. I strive to be direct and genuine for the sake of actively engaging my clients…and I am certain that none of them would accuse me of being shy or afraid to speak my mind.

What drew you to your current specialty?
I discovered a love for the humanities—notably literature, music, and art—at an early age due to the profound way in which they have helped me to understand and appreciate the human condition. This eventually merged with an interest in medicine and a desire to help improve people's lives. Over my life, I’ve sought to understand individuals within a wide variety of frameworks—biological, behavioral, psychological, sociological, religious/spiritual, and philosophical. Over time this has cultivated in me a deepening appreciation for paradox, mystery, and the individual realities of other minds. I bring these perspectives into treatment with each person I work with as I join them in their own respective journey toward growth.

Anything interesting about yourself that you’d like to share with your prospective patients?
I have an extensive background in basic science and clinical research, public health, ethics, speaking, publishing, and developing programs to integrate worldview and medicine. After completing my undergraduate and medical school education on full-tuition academic scholarships, I underwent a medical internship at Vanderbilt and transitioned to psychiatry residency at the University of Washington where I served as chief resident and graduated with a distinction in advanced psychotherapy. Currently, I hold a faculty appointment at UW as a clinical instructor training future generations of doctors. I am also board-certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.

If you had to select a quote to represent yourself as a physician / provider to your patients, what would it be?
"In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer."
