Overview

I believe most human problems can be attributed to one or more of the five areas: physical condition, emotion, belief, behavior, and environment. If one area suffers, the other areas suffer with it. Welcome to Kaiser Permanente in Riverside. We offer a very broad range of services. I will guide you through our system and hope that our care will enhance your overall well-being. Biography I grew up in Taiwan when the small island was transitioning from post-World War II recovery to economic prosperity. It was there, as the oldest son in a business-oriented family, that I learned to allocate resources judiciously. Leaving the comforts of home at age 15, I quickly became more socially sensitive and independent. I have been married for over 30 years. Through engaging in and coaching my sons in competitive tennis, I have learned to perform calmly under pressure, manage crises, pursue personal excellence, and embrace competitors as my friends or teammates. After more than 15 years of practicing gastroenterology, I know that the color of the human colon and stomach are always the same, regardless of people's outer skin color. As a physician, my mission is to optimize health and thereby help individuals make the most of life. About my practice As a gastroenterologist, I spend half of my time in clinical practice, which includes gastrointestinal consultation and testing. Our colon cancer screening rate is above the 90th percentile in the U.S., based on HEDIS (the Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set). We have diagnosed many colon cancers in an early stage. Our team focuses on quality, service, and access to care. As an assistant area medical director, I spend the other half of my time overseeing the quality, utilization, electronic medical records, and physician education at our Riverside Medical Center. I obtained my master's degree in public health from Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health, where I was motivated to believe that "Individual care can be enhanced by appropriate management of a group of population." How I thrive To maintain my physical and mental health and promote my spiritual growth, I engage regularly in: 1. Thanking my teachers every day. My teachers are my wife and our two sons, my parents, my patients, my colleagues, my professors, and our Creator. 2. Self-reflection every day. 3. Playing tennis and going to the gym. 4. Walking or running upstairs. I don't use the elevator unless it's absolutely necessary. 5. Spending time and sharing my learning with my wife and our sons. 6. Participating and speaking in church or at other community events. 7. Reading medical, sports, psychology, business, and spiritual journals or books.
