Overview

Don W. Powell, MD, was recently presented the Laureate Award at the Texas Chapter of the American College of Physicians annual meeting. The Laureate Award honors Fellows and Masters of the College who have demonstrated by their example and conduct an abiding commitment to excellence in medical care, education, or research and in service to their community, their Chapter, and the American College of Physicians. Dr. Powell is Professor in the Departments of Internal Medicine and Neuroscience and Cell Biology, Director of the Institute for Translational Sciences-Clinical Research Center, Chief of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, and holder of the Bassel and Frances Blanton Distinguished Professorship in Internal Medicine.Dr. Powell is recognized internationally for his expertise and contributions to the field of gastroenterology, particularly in the areas of intestinal transport and inflammation. He has been awarded NIH funding for over 40 years, and has published numerous peer-reviewed papers as well as book chapters and reviews. He has edited leading medical textbooks and is currently Associate Editor of the recently published fifth edition of the "Textbook of Gastroenterology" and the fourth edition of the "Atlas of Gastroenterology." He is also an Associate Editor on a new book "Principles of Clinical Gastroenterology." Dr. Powell has served as President of the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) from 1993-1994, on the Boards of Directors of the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) from 1996-2000 and the Alpha Omega Alpha Honorary Medical Society from 1999 to present. He has been recognized repeatedly for his clinical and teaching excellence, which includes being named a number of times as one of the Best Doctors in America, and receiving the UTMB John P. McGovern Award in Oslerian Medicine and the UTMB Internal Medicine Faculty-Alumni Society Teaching Award. He received the Julius Friedenwald Medal, the highest recognition awarded by the American Gastroenterological Association, for his lifetime contribution to the field. He has also been honored with a lecture bearing his name both by the AGA Institute and by an endowment from the Edward and Sally Futch Charitable Fund.Dr. Powell earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Alabama, Birmingham. He completed residency training at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston and at Yale-New Haven Community Hospital. He also completed a Special National Institutes of Health Fellowship in Physiology at Yale University School of Medicine. Prior to joining UTMB in 1991, Dr. Powell was on the faculty at UNC, where he served as Professor of Medicine, Chief of the Division of Digestive Diseases and Nutrition, and Director of the NIH-funded Center for Gastrointestinal Biology and Disease. He served as Chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine at UTMB for nearly a decade. During that time, he led the department in continued growth of its research and educational programs and increasing excellence in its patient care activities. From 2002-2006, he was appointed as Associate Dean for Research.
