- Certified in Psychiatry, American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology - Certified in Psychoanalysis, Board on Professional Standards, American Psychoanalytic Assn - Professor of Clinical Psychiatry, Eastern Virginia Medical School, Norfolk, VA - Training and Supervising Analyst, Contemporary Freudian Society, Washington, DC - Distinguished Fellow, American Psychiatric Association - Fellow and past President, American College of Psychoanalysts - Fellow, International Psychoanalytic Association - Civilian Faculty, Naval Regional Medical Center, Portsmouth, VA - Past President (twice), Virginia Psychoanalytic Society - Private practice since 1975 My professional practice involves diagnostic consultations with people; psychotherapy or psychoanalysis when these treatments are indicated, sometimes with adjunctive psychotropic medication; teaching in medical school settings in Norfolk, throughout the U.S., and in different countries; supervision of the psychotherapeutic work of mental health practitioners; and periodic expert services in legal (civil) cases, workers' compensation, and (in the past) child protection cases. I am humbled by the many teaching awards I have been given -- many by psychiatry residents at EVMS, one by psychiatry residents at Tulane Medical School, and the naming of the teaching award after me by the Dept of Psychiatry at Naval Medical Center - Portsmouth. I have authored three books, one on defense mechanisms, one on psychiatric diagnosis, and one on psychotherapy technique -- all published by Routledge in New York. You can find them at www.jeromeblackmanmd.com. In my current private practice, where people I am treating share extremely personal and sensitive information abou themselves, all patient communications are kept strictly confidential. Even the choice of whether to file for insurance benefits is left to the patient. Because of such confidentiality, I do not encourage people I am treating or have treated to \"endorse\" me on public websites. As mentioned, a small percentage of my practice has involved doing periodic independent psychiatric assessments (sometimes called IME's - independent medical evaluations) in certain legal cases. These are not treatment situations; they are one-time evaluations, where the person being evaluated has given explicit written permission for me to offer my honest opinions about their psychiatric problems to the attorney or agency requesting the evaluation. Sometimes the people I have evaluated did not agree with my opinions in those legal matters, and I noticed that a couple of unhappy people I evaluated have decided, anonymously, to give me low ratings on this website -- out of revenge. I accept this as a predictable consequence of my honesty in those legal settings, but think it is necessary for future patients to understand those circumstances. Above, I listed some of my qualifications and experience.
