What I love most about being a cardiologist is that in an instant I can impact a life. When I was a 7 year old boy, my father awoke feeling poorly, yet insisted on taking my older brother Barry fishing as he had promised. Shortly thereafter, he collapsed on our cabin-cruiser and died suddenly from a heart attack at the age of 37. There was no treatment. Since this family tragedy in 1965, the field of cardiology has advanced rapidly and I have been privileged to be a part of many incredible advances. - In the early years of my training, I was only able to give morphine to calm the patient as we watched for complications of a damaged heart. As a medical resident, I witnessed the first use of streptokinase, the so-called clot buster medication, in an attempt to treat a patient in the midst of heart attack. Today, I work with a team of individuals who, within minutes of a patient’s arrival, assist me in opening a blocked artery with a coronary stent, essentially aborting a heart attack. Although I can never bring my father back, each patient and family I treat, using the wonderful advances over nearly fifty years, allows his memory to live on through my work as a cardiologist. - We are a family of four: my wife Cindy, daughter Emily, and son Andrew. We enjoy traveling to Guatemala, where my wife started a non-profit organization that includes a preschool for 16 children and supports tuition for over 75 students to attend their local schools. My daughter currently lives in Jerusalem, working with a human rights organization called Windows. Andrew attends Curry College outside Boston. I especially enjoy time relaxing at the coast in our home in Beaufort, NC; swimming, boating, and occasionally catching a fish. Despite spending much time within the walls of the hospital, the outdoors, whether hiking in the mountains or watching the Martins flying over the marshes, brings me much contentment.
