Dr. Waltz is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in surgical care of the eye. His practice is limited to medical and surgical problems, with a special emphasis on optimizing refractive outcomes. He is widely recognized as an innovator in refractive cataract surgery and refractive lens surgery. He coined the name “Prelex” for refractive lens surgery in 2000. This term is now commonly used throughout the world. He has been invited to share his opinions, experience, and techniques across the globe. For further details, see his Curriculum Vitae. Prior to starting clinical practice, Dr. Waltz had a long and involved educational experience. After graduating from high school in Maryland in 1974, he spent the next 19 years obtaining an unparalleled education in optics, medicine, and surgery. This gave him a very unique perspective on patient care. He attended Indiana University as an undergraduate and went on to graduate from the Indiana University School of Optometry with both BS and OD degrees in 1981. He continued his optometric training at the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tennessee for two years. In 1987, he received his MD degree from Meharry Medical College in Nashville. He completed a one-year medical internship at Vanderbilt University in 1988. His eye surgery training began during a three-year residency in ophthalmology at the University of Florida ending in 1991. His chairman at the University of Florida was Dr. Melvin Rubin, who also is both an optometrist and an ophthalmologist. Dr. Rubin was the President of the American Academy of Ophthalmology at the time. Dr. Waltz continued his surgical training under Dr. Frank A. Nesi in Detroit, Michigan where he learned the fine art of caring for patients with very complex surgical problems. He completed his fellowship in eyelid and orbital surgery in 1992. He published a textbook with Dr. Nesi on eyelid and orbital surgery, in order to share their experience with other surgeons. At this point, he became a full-time professor of surgery at the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield, where he learned medical education and patient care from the perspective of a medical school faculty member. In 1993, Dr. Waltz joined Dr. Michael Orr in founding Eye Surgeons of Indiana. Since the mid-1990’s, Dr. Waltz’s primary professional interest has been in refractive surgery in its various forms, including refractive cataract surgery, laser vision correction, and refractive lens surgery. He was one of the first ophthalmologists to offer laser vision correction in Indiana. He is one the most experienced surgeons in the state, with over 20,000 successful laser vision correction surgeries to date. He was one of the first ophthalmologists in the world to implant the Array multifocal IOL for refractive surgery. He is also thought to be the first ophthalmologist in the world to receive the Array multifocal IOL in his own eyes. He co-edited the standard textbook on the subject (Mastering Refractive IOLs). He is regularly asked to discuss cataract surgery and refractive lens surgery with surgeons and optometrists around the world. He participates in FDA clinical trials to develop the latest medications and implants to further improve and refine eye surgery in the United States.
