Dr. Syed Abutalib always treats his patients as though they are family membersnot merely as "diseases, medical records or numbers." When an opportunity came along in 2008 to join Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) at Midwestern Regional Medical Center (Midwestern), where doctors, practitioners and support staff members treat patients with such high regard, dignity and compassion, Dr. Abutalib couldnt resist. Dr. Abutalib places the care for his patients and their families first and foremost. He believes in creating an atmosphere that facilitates open, honest, three-way patient/caregiver/doctor communication, which is why he is always accessible to his patients and their families. Dr. Abutalibs care reaches far beyond the walls of Midwestern, as he routinely provides patients and family members with his cell and home phone numbers to call should they ever need to consult with him. The board-certified hematologist and medical oncologist devotes ample time to each of his patients, empowering them to take an active role in their treatment plan. Dr. Abutalib earned a medical degree from Dow Medical College in Karachi, Pakistan. He completed an internal medicine residency with an emphasis in hematologic malignancies and bone marrow transplant at Cook County Hospital in Chicago. He completed a fellowship in hematology/oncology at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). While working on his fellowship, Dr. Abutalib spearheaded the "Thrombosis and Homeostasis" conference at UIC.As the Assistant Director of the Stem Cell Transplant and Cell Therapy Program at Midwestern, Dr. Abutalibs goal is to continue growing the services offered by the program to better serve our growing number of patients. Dr. Abutalib has been published in a number of medical journals, including Current Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, the American Journal of Clinical Pathology, Clinical Lymphoma & Myeloma, Clinical Leukemia, Thrombosis and Hemostasis, Hematology/Oncology News Journal and Hematology/Oncology Clinics of North America. He has also written chapters for medical textbooks, including Acute Leukemias (2007) and Evidence-Based Hematology (2008). Additionally, he has presented at clinical conferences and meetings on a variety of topics, including the Chicago Lymphoma Society. Whenever possible, Dr. Abutalib lends his support to the community as a volunteer. He is an active member of the Christian Childrens Orphan Program. Dr. Abutalib is also a member of the American Society of Hematology and the American Society of Clinical Oncology. He continues to collaborate with other experts in the area of hematology/oncology to explore new medical breakthroughs and treatment options in order to better educate, treat and care for his patients.
