Alice Coyle, MD, was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Her family is deeply rooted in local heritage. Her grandfather was a hard-working coal miner. Her father joined the Navy right out of high school and served in the Pacific on various ships. He returned to Scranton after the war, to work, marry his sweetheart and raise his family of five children: Thomas, Alice, twins Sean and Mary, and Michael. "My dad worked very hard and loved his family unconditionally," says Dr. Coyle. "He told me I should be a doctor. I trusted his advice." After graduating from Scranton Prep High School in 1977 with a love for math and science, Alice enrolled at the University of Scranton to begin her journey to becoming a doctor. Upon graduating from the University of Scranton, Alice continued her medical education at the Hahnemann University School of Medicine in Philadelphia. She found medical school to be fascinating and challenging. She wanted to specialize in something. Alice knew she had a passion for fixing things. From a very early age, she was always fixing something. She and her brother completely rebuilt the four barrel carburetor of her 1976 Buick Skylark. They replaced the engine in their old Fiat car. She became an "expert" in Bondo repair. Interestingly, and in keeping with her obsession of fixing things, at the age of 39, Alice along with her brother, enrolled in an evening welding class at the Luzerne County Votech School. When Alice was introduced to orthopaedics in medical school, she immediately knew it was the specialty for her. "I discovered that my love for fixing things and orthopaedic surgery were a perfect match," she declared. Dr. Coyle completed her surgical residency at the New York University-Bellevue Medical Center. She continued her education by completing a Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery Fellowship at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. She's been certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery since 1992. Dr. Coyle began her orthopaedic surgery career at Stanley Memorial Hospital in Albemarle, North Carolina. She returned home to the Scranton area a few years later to help care for her aging parents. She's been a past member of the medical staff at Geisinger Medical Group and also worked as an orthopaedic surgeon in the Scranton area. In January 2009, Dr. Coyle joined the medical staff of Community Health Associates LLC and the medical staff of Memorial Hospital in Towanda. "I believe life is a series of choices. At every fork in the road someone is guiding you," says Dr. Coyle. "I am very happy for the opportunity to give something back to help people. I have so much to be thankful for. Sick and suffering people teach me a lot. Practicing medicine is a very positive experience. I am delighted to be at home here in the heart Northeastern Pennsylvania with my family nearby." Dr. Coyle lives in Towanda. "I love it here," she says. "I've lived in the city and that's not the life for me. I much prefer the small-town atmosphere with open spaces and quiet streets. I am looking forward to taking care of the people in my home community." Dr. Coyle is an accomplished orthopaedic surgeon. She's provided thousands of surgeries throughout her 19-year career. She is ready to help people with symptoms such as: * Pain in the shoulder that keeps you from sleeping at night. * Numbness, tingling or stiffness in your hands. * Aching or swelling in your knees or feet. * Lumps or bumps that are troublesome. * Pain or inability to move freely. * Muscle pulls and sprains. * Any kind of injury or fracture of the shoulder, elbow, hand, ribs, hip, knee, ankle or foot. Dr. Coyle pointed out that not everyone with an injury or pain will need surgery. "Sometimes medication or physical therapy can help a person recover and get back to healthy living," she said. "I am very impressed with the operating room staff at Memorial Hospital," says Dr. Coyle. "I considered many, many opportunities before I decided to settle here at Memorial Hospital. When I s
