Overview

My Healthcare Practice Recovering from atherosclerosis involves a multi-disciplinary approach, incorporating both medical, interventional radiologic and surgical specialties. Before a patient should consider surgery, they should first have addressed and controlled the four major risk factors for atherosclerosis. These are their blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes and especially tobacco use. Special emphasis is placed on cessation of smoking because continued tobacco use significantly shortens the lifespan of any vascular implant and increases the complication rates for surgery. Many patients are not appropriate for vascular surgery at the time of their first visit with us, but it is alway our goal to improve their situation. Surgery, when appropriate, can give patients an improved lifestyle. There are always significant risks to major vascular surgery and part of the vascular surgeons role is to advise about these risks. In the long run, vascular patients must regain the habits of good diet and exercise in order to be successful. Our clinic offers the full range of modern vascular services for diagnosis and treatment. These include angiograms , angioplasties with or without stents, major vascular graft reconstructions and aortic stent grafting. We also treat complex venous conditions and rare arterial syndromes. Receiving Your Healthcare From Kaiser Permanente I am always saddened by the patient who says at the end of a consultation "doctor, just tell me what to do"...The goal of the Permanente Medical Group is to give our ptaients a very objective opinion as to the pros and cons of vascular surgery. In our specialty, it is often not a matter of whether a procedure can be done but rather whether it should be done. We are constantly weighing risk vs reward as well as short term vs long term gain. Fortunately, quite a bit is known about past outcomes of vascular operations. It is my goal to educate our patients as to how their particular health situation integrates with this known data. In this manner, the patient can make a more informed decision as to whether to have surgery or not. My Outside Interests Away from my practice, I enjoy golfing, cycling, and am an avid motorcycle enthusiast. Last year, I went on vacation trips scuba diving in Cozumel, a week-long off road motorcycle trip from Ensenada to Cabo San Lucas in Baja, California, and to a golfing school. My wife is a professional artist working in 3 media: acrylic/oils, clay/ceramic sculpture, and jewelry.
