Overview

My Profession and Why I Chose It I am a vascular surgeon. This means I operate on the blood vessels of your body and work with the diseases and behaviors that influence them. I decided to get involved in this area because the operations are technically challenging. Also, the practice of vascular surgery is changing remarkably and will be for the foreseeable future. The patients that I work with are usually of a more senior age range -- this is the group of people that I have always had a heart for. All of these factors appeal to my desire for a challenging and rewarding career. My Practice Philosophy As I mentioned above, I enjoy working with seniors. In dealing with complicated disease processes that affect them, I believe good communication is a major key. Some of my most satisfying moments in practice are when I help my patients understand what is going on with their health and help them make positive lifestyle changes. My Tenure with Kaiser Permanente I have been a part of Kaiser Permanente officially for over 6 years, but I had previously spent an additional 4 years with them through my rotations during my residency at University of California Davis. In that time, I have come to appreciate the ability to develop my practice to fit my patients and me. I have been able to further my experience in the newer area of endovascular surgery and apply newer techniques to standard operations to achieve better outcomes for my patients. As a group, the vascular surgeons of our northern California hospitals have developed a quarterly meeting to share ideas and results to improve care for all. Why I Enjoy Practicing Medicine at Kaiser Permanente In addition to all of the educational opportunities and availability of state of the art information technology, I feel the two most beneficial areas of practice with Kaiser Permanente are that of clinical physician leadership and the freedom to practice medicine the way I want. I simply can't overstate these areas. I know that ethical people who care for patients are helping to make decisions for the future of our patients. When I come to work each day I know that I can make decisions with my patients that are based solely on knowledge and experience. I can order tests and arrange operations as the situation dictates without having to call anyone to ask for approval. In this age of medicine, this makes Kaiser Permanente unique. My Personal History I made my way to northern California when I was 18 years old from rural Pennsylvania. I received my undergraduate degree from California State University, Hayward. Afterward, I worked for a year as a phlebotomist and in a hospital laboratory to get more familiar with the hospital setting. I received my medical degree from Hahnemann University, School of Medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1993. I truly loved California and came back to complete my internship and residency in general surgery at University California Davis Medical Center. The University of California Davis surgery residency program works closely with Kaiser Permanente and I got to know the system and the surgeons very well. In 1998, I joined Kaiser Permanente and completed a 1-year clinical clerkship in vascular surgery. I am a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. During my residency, I felt the desire to give something back to my country and to help under-served areas. I joined the United States Army Reserve in 1995. I have gone on a humanitarian mission to Ecuador in 2002 and have served in Iraq and Bosnia – Herzegovina. My wife and I have 3 wonderful kids and enjoy a variety of outdoor activities with them. I have many pictures of them in my office and I'm always happy to show them.
