Is there a definitive test that will diagnose angina?
Angina is a subjective sensation, so there unfortunately are no diagnostic tests that can verify this subjective condition. Also, the pain of angina can take many forms. The tests we do have to diagnose coronary artery disease, such as the treadmill test (exercise stress tests) and radiologic imaging studies of the coronary arteries; can diagnose coronary artery disease but cannot answer with certainty whether chest pain is from angina or other sources. Whether or not chest pain is due to angina is a distinction that should be made clinically by a physician, taking into account the character of the symptoms, the results of testing, and the risk profile of the patient.
