Ask the experts

I have glaucoma and problems with the retina because of my diabetes and I like to read a lot. I would like to know if reading is going to aggravate my eye condition? When do you know that you will need laser surgery to improve your vision? Is the laser the only solution to this problem?

Doctor's response

The major long term complication of diabetes mellitus is damage to blood vessels throughout the body. Damage to blood vessels in the kidneys can lead to kidney failure, damage to vessels to the nerves can lead to diabetic neuropathy, damage to vessels in the legs can cause diabetic foot ulcers, damage to vessels in the retina cause diabetic retinopathy.
