A cytokine storm is a condition in which a large amount of cytokines (chemicals produced by the body's immune system) are released into the bloodstream in a short time, creating an overabundance of these chemicals.

Causes of a Cytokine Storm

Causes of this severe reaction by the body's immune system can include infections such as COVID-19, autoimmune conditions, or other diseases. A cytokine storm can also be caused by some kinds of immune therapy, including CAR-T cell therapy.
