Dreams arise as a result of electrical impulses in the brain when you sleep. There does not exist any scientific evidence that dreaming something may be a sign of some event that may happen in the future or be some sort of divine guidance. Some researchers, however, suggest that sometimes dreaming of being pregnant can be a sign of things to come. Based on various theories of dream interpretation, dreaming of being pregnant can signal the following events:
- You have been thinking of starting a family.
- You have a busy life, and you are confused about whether a child at this time is a good idea. A dream may be the brain’s way of subconsciously letting you know that you want a child and should go for it.
- You are pregnant and missing the subtle signs of pregnancy such as weight gain and feeling tired. This is your brain’s way of giving you a heads up.
- If you are anxious about being pregnant, you may repeatedly dream about being pregnant. These dreams are called recurring dreams. They point to something that is important to us or stresses us out. It may be the brain’s way of telling us that we need to work on these desires or fears.
Another interpretation of dreams was suggested by Carl Jung. He assumed that dreams bore relation to the events occurring in our lives at a personal level. Thus, being pregnant in a dream may not be about being actually pregnant. It may point to the following events:
- You are about to start a new project at work that you have been waiting for long (your pet project or your baby project).
- It may signal a new responsibility that you anticipate shortly. This may be a new venture or a new investment. A dream about a healthy pregnancy means your brain thinks or hopes it will be executed without any hitches.
- A dream about being pregnant may also point to a new relationship blooming in your life. Being pregnant means that you are ready to nurture that responsibility.
The motivated interpretation of your dreams will impact your everyday lives. Sometimes, dreams can implant a creative thought, inspiring you to go ahead with a decision (in this case, starting a family, a new venture, or a new relationship).
Why do we dream?
80% of our dreams happen in a stage of sleep called rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. This is a stage of a deep sleep, where the brain is rejuvenating itself after a day’s work and rewarming its brain cell circuits. This stage of sleep is associated with memories and correlations and has access to our deepest desires, which we otherwise keep hidden. REM sleep dreams may be the brain’s way of reorganizing the memory and processing our feelings.
Freud suggests that dreams happen when our ungratified or unfulfilled instinct is triggered. A dream may be the brain's way of seeking wish fulfillment to fulfill at least temporarily. Often, our dream content is in accordance to our pre-existing beliefs, faith in God, and our current relationships.
Dreams in REM sleep are often vivid, emotional, and colorful, and most individuals remember them. These dreams may point to the recent events in our lives and are therefore worth analyzing.
