Ask the experts

My nephew has been having some kind of medical problem. According to my sister, he has bloody stools and he seems to be losing weight. He also has diarrhea. The hospital is doing 'stool' tests. The results aren't back yet. In the meantime, we're wondering what this could mean.

Doctor's response

Generally diarrhea with visible blood in the stool can indicate a problem is the anus, rectum, or colon ("large bowel"). There are a number of reasons for such a situation--infections being a frequent situation. The specific stool tests will help identify the problem so that a specific approach to remedy the situation may be addressed.

The loss of weight would tend to go along with an intestinal tract which is not working well, regardless of the cause.
