Wash your face at least twice a day and after sweating

  • You can wash your face with a gentle, non-alcoholic cleanser.
  • If possible, use warm water for washing your face. Avoid using water that is too hot or too cold

Use sunscreen daily

  • A common myth is that sunlight helps clear acne. Exposure to the sun in fact can irritate your skin which can trigger acne or worsen existing acne.
  • Make it a habit to use a non-comedogenic and gel-based sunscreen with SPF>30 while going out in the sun.

Keep your skin moisturized

  • Another common myth is that moisturizers are bad for oily skin that is prone to acne. But the truth is that keeping your skin moisturized helps in getting a blemish-free and healthy skin. 
  • Choose oil-free, non-comedogenic moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated and glowing.

Choose skin-friendly cosmetics

  • Choose makeup products, particularly foundation and compact powders that are non-creamy, oil-free, and lightweight in nature. 
  • Choose a mineral-based foundation or makeup.

Remove your makeup at night

  • Do not forget to remove your makeup with a gentle cleanser before going to bed at night. Makeup that is kept overnight can clog the pores and give you zits. Give your skin a chance to breathe by removing the excess layer of makeup.

Exfoliate your skin

  • Exfoliating the skin removes the dead cells and thus prevents clogging of pores. You can exfoliate your skin either with the help of soft cotton cloth or chemical-based products containing mandelic acid or glycolic acids once or twice a week.

Change your food habits

  • There is some evidence that eating foods that have a high glycemic index such as sweet potatoes contribute to acne by altering hormone levels. The altered hormone levels can increase sebum production and lead to clogged pores. It does not harm much to avoid such foods that have other health benefits (diabetes prevention) as well.
  • Some research studies have also found a link between dairy milk intake and acne. See if avoiding dairy milk helps reduces your acne.

De-stress yourself

Get adequate sleep

  • Lack of sleep can trigger inflammation and cause breakouts. Try to get seven to nine hours of sleep daily.

Avoid smoking

  • Ample studies suggest there is a strong association between smoking and acne. Hence, try quitting smoking to deal with your acne.
