It is also used to treat a certain type of pneumonia (pneumocystis pneumonia) in patients with a weakened immune system. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria and the pneumocystis fungus.This medication treats only certain types of infections. It will not work for viral infections (e.g., flu). Unnecessary use or misuse of any antibiotic can lead to its decreased effectiveness.
