A sore throat can be caused by viral infections like the common cold, the flu, or mumps. Sore throats caused by bacterial infections include diphtheria, tonsillitis, or some STDs. Some toxins (allergens), trauma or injury, or "mechanical causes," for example, breathing through the mouth. Typical symptoms of a sore throat include throat pain, coughing, sneezing, fever, and swollen lymph nodes. Home remedies to sooth a sore throat include remedies that are common such as gargling with warm salt water or sucking on throat lozenges; to essential oils, licorice gargles, and slippery elm leaves.
