What are the symptoms of acute hypersensitivity pneumonitis?

Symptoms of acute hypersensitivity pneumonitis include:

  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Coughing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Body aches, malaise

Chest X-ray may show diffuse small nodules in the lungs. Typically, the symptoms will subside hours to days after exposure (provided there are no repeated exposures). The abnormalities on chest X-ray abnormalities will also disappear. The patient's condition can deteriorate after exposure; therefore it is imperative that a medical evaluation be performed to determine the best course of treatment.

Comment from: losgatoslady, 55-64 Female (Patient) Published: March 25

Hypersensitivity pneumonitis caused terrible, loud, dry cough, shortness of breath, weight loss, and vomiting. I ended up in the hospital on 6 liters of oxygen and prednisone starting at 80 mg and dosing down after 1 month, taking prednisone a total of 3 months. Awful mental health issues with the prednisone, but the doctors told me the inflammation was so severe, I had no choice but to have prednisone therapy. Likely cause was cleaning repeatedly with bleach. I am feeling well, use 2 liters of oxygen while sleeping, but not needed during the day. I am waiting to hear from my doctor about my current diagnosis/prognosis. I am told I have some scarring on my lung, but do not know if my lungs are irreversibly and permanently damaged. Grateful to have had recovery from this awful disease. I wouldn't wish it on anyone, especially going through acute respiratory failure.
