MODERATOR:
Welcome to WebMD Live, Dr. Berman. Thank you for joining us today.

BERMAN:
Thanks.

MODERATOR:
Please tell us about the National Women's Sexual Satisfaction Survey. How many women were involved and what information were you trying to obtain?

BERMAN:
This was a national survey conducted on American women with approximately 2000 women surveyed. The goal of the study was to determine what characteristics and qualities sexually satisfied women have in common and to define sexual satisfaction in women, in order to impart that information such that all women can know and achieve sexual satisfaction. We determined these qualities and in our book have identified them. We also give specific tips on how all women can achieve satisfaction and tips for improving their sexual lives and sexual health.

MODERATOR:
What is the first secret to being sexually satisfied?

BERMAN:
The first secret that sexually satisfied women have in common is the ability to communicate their sexual wants, needs and desires to their partners, both in and out of the bedroom. They have the ability to not only to communicate but the understanding and knowledge of what they need.

"So while women can have sex, even enjoy sex, on a particular encounter or occasion, for her to perceive overall sexual satisfaction in her life and relationship, she needs to feel emotionally connected to her partner."

MODERATOR:
Then you discuss emotional well-being as a factor.

BERMAN:
The second quality that sexually satisfied women have in common is a sense of emotional well-being -- a positive attitude and outlook. This means that women that feel good about themselves, feel good about their bodies and are happy and content in their lives have better sex lives and are more satisfied.

Now, clearly it makes intuitive sense that happiness equates with satisfaction, but what we learned is that overall emotional health, stability and happiness also equates with sexual satisfaction. So therefore, if a woman is experiencing a lot of stress in her life -- anxiety over relationship, work, depression or dissatisfaction with her life or relationship -- this will negatively affect her sex life, and needs to be attended to in order to achieve a satisfying and fulfilling relationship.

MODERATOR:
The emotional relationship between partners also has a great effect on a woman's sexual satisfaction.

BERMAN:
The emotional relationship is the connection that a woman has and experiences with her partner and it's critical. Women perceive and experience sex in terms of a context, and by that I mean the relationship that they have with their partner. Women have difficulty separating sex from emotions such as closeness, attachment, trust, love and support. If a woman is not connected emotionally to her partner, sex suffers; she is less inclined to be sexual, and thus is less satisfied.
