Universal ABC Beauty Supply International Issues Recall After FDA Finds Undeclared Drug in Company's Weight Loss Pills

April 22, 2009 -- Universal ABC Beauty Supply International Inc. of Brooklyn, N.Y., is recalling 34 weight loss products because FDA tests show they contain sibutramine, the active ingredient in the appetite suppressant Meridia.

Meridia, which is FDA approved, isn't being recalled.

The recalled weight loss products aren't FDA approved and their labels don't note that they contain sibutramine.

"FDA advises that these products may pose a threat to consumers because sibutramine is known to substantially increase blood pressure and/or pulse rate in some patients and may present a significant risk for patients with a history of coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, arrhythmias, or stroke," states a news release from Universal ABC Beauty Supply International.

Universal ABC Beauty Supply International states that it's discontinuing the recalled products and hasn't received any reports of illness or injury linked to those products.

If you have any of the recalled products, don't use them. Return them to the place of purchase for a full refund or a partial refund of the unused pills.
