Thyroid Q&A by Dr. Mathur

I am taking 50mg daily of Eltroxin for hypothyroidism. I'm also trying to get pregnant. Is it safe to take this medication while pregnant?

Medical Author Dr. Ruchi Mathur
Medical Editor Dr. Jay W. Marks

Answer:

Eltroxin is not know to cause problems in pregnancy. It is important to remember that thyroid hormone levels in the blood must be watched closely during pregnancy. The requirement for hormone may change as pregnancy moves from the first to the third trimester, and giving too little or too much hormone can result in problems. It also is important to mention that any woman on replacement therapy with thyroid hormone who wishes to become pregnant should consult with her physician before conceiving to make certain that her thyroid hormone level is appropriate.

Thank you for your question.
