Arthritis Q&A by Dr. Shiel

Will the nodules that occur as the result of RA disappear over time? I have one on my elbow, and another has just appeared on the inside of my foot.

Answer:

Rheumatoid nodules do sometimes spontaneously, slowly come and go over time. They can also be annoying and can even become infected. The locations you have described are very common, as are the fingers.

Treatment of rheumatoid nodules includes avoiding irritating trauma to the nodule, local cortisone injections, and surgical removal. You should discuss the best options for you with your doctor.

Thank you for your question.
