First Gum Disease Toothpaste Gets FDA OK
ROCKVILLE, MARYLAND-According to an official FDA
report, on July 14, the FDA approved the first toothpaste shown
to reduce gum disease safely and effectively in controlled clinical
trials.
The toothpaste, Colgate Total, is the first U.S.
toothpaste to contain the active ingredient triclosan. It also
contains fluoride. Together fluoride and triclosan have been
shown to help prevent tooth decay, plaque and gingivitis when
used as directed in a conscientiously applied program of oral
hygiene and professional dental care.
In controlled studies, Colgate Total performed significantly
better than a standard fluoride toothpaste in helping to prevent
plaque and gingivitis in adults. Its effect on helping to prevent
cavities was identical to the fluoride dentifrice.
Colgate Total is intended for adults and children
ages 6 and older. However, its effects on plaque and gingivitis
have not been established in children.
Triclosan, an ingredient found in many antibacterial
soaps, is a disinfectant. Its antibacterial properties in the
mouth, however, have not been determined.
Colgate-Palmolive Co. of New York, N.Y., manufactures
Colgate Total.
