In 1981, he founded the Samata Yoga Center in Los Angeles, and he is chairman of the International Association of Yoga Therapists. Payne holds a doctorate and a master's degrees in fitness education with emphasis in Hatha yoga from Pacific Western University. His background is in psychology, and he has completed graduate work in physical therapy at Cal-State University Long Beach. He was the U.S. representative to the first World Congress of Yoga in Montevideo, Uruguay, and he has received Outstanding Achievement Awards for Yoga in Europe and the U.S., as well as the Golden Lotus Award from South America. In addition, he founded the Healthy Back Program at the world-famous Rancho La Puerta Fitness Spa, and the Corporate Yoga Program at the J. Paul Getty Museum and the new Getty Center in Brentwood, Calif. Most recently, Payne co-founded the Yoga program at the UCLA Medical School, the first of its kind in the nation.
