(HealthDay News) -- Celiac disease is caused by an intolerance to gluten, a protein found in wheat, rye, barley and many other foods.

The National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse says potential complications and symptoms of celiac disease include:

• Poor digestion.
• Pain in the joints or bones, or osteoporosis.
• Iron-deficiency anemia.
• Fatigue, anxiety or depression.
• A tingling sensation or numbness in the hands.
• Seizures.
• A itchy rash.
• Canker sores.
• Fertility problems, including miscarriage or irregular menstrual cycles.
