Topic: Chondroitin Sulfate and Glucosamine in Treating Arthritis

Dr. Lee:
What is the proper way to use these two agents?

Dr. Shiel:
If one is going to take glucosamine they should take it regularly, generally 1500 mg per day as a daily dose. It should be taken with food and should be tried for a period of approximately 4 to 6 weeks to determine whether or not it is going to be effective in relieving arthritis symptoms. If it's not at that point, at least in my practice, I would recommend patients discontinue that form of treatment and perhaps seek another type of medication or alternative treatment.
