Health Tip: Giving Your Newborn a Bath

(HealthDay News) -- Giving an infant a bath can be stressful, as the little one probably hates to get cold.

The U.S. National Library of Medicine suggests how parents can keep newborns safe and comfortable during a bath:

  • Make sure you have a towel nearby so you can wrap the baby as soon as you pull the baby from the water.
  • Take care not to get the remnants of baby's umbilical cord wet.
  • Dip your elbow into the water to make sure it's warm, but not too hot.
  • Save shampooing baby's hair for last, so the head stays dry and warm during most of the bath.
  • Limit bathing to about every three days.
