Comment from: Jay, 35-44 Male (Patient)

I had an aching feeling set in late one evening. I thought I was getting the flu. Overnight diarrhea set in and progressively got worse and I began to sweat profusely. The next night I was making bathroom trips every 30 minutes or so with severe diarrhea. I had no appetite and I was not very thirsty even though I was still sweating very badly. I still had no fever, but back ache was much worse. I thought I might be passing another kidney stone. The next night I had nausea and very dark urine, so I went to my Doctor and a possible stone was diagnosed. Early the next morning I woke to go to the bathroom and was very dizzy. I managed to sit on the toilet, but woke up on the floor with a red mark on my forehead. My back pain was very strong on the middle left side of my back. After a short nap it felt lower on the left side. I went for a CT scan and they discovered no kidney stones, but a ruptured spleen. I was hospitalized for the spleen, and with every test given to me, nothing was found until a stool culture revealed Salmonella. Three days later, I was re-admitted to the hospital for a perennial abscess that may have also been caused by the Salmonella. Since they could not find any visible signs of trauma. The surgeon concluded that the spleen rupture was caused by my fainting. I have read online that though rare, a spleen fracture could be caused by a case of Salmonella. Published: July 01 ::

I woke up in the middle of the night feeling headachy and I put it down to sinus. The next day I felt bloated all day and when I finished work I was exhausted my muscles and everything were aching and I had a bloated feeling still in my belly. For the next day I had really bad stomach cramps and felt very bloated however I just put it down to stress. The next morning I had to work at 7am and I feel very sick, but was determined to go to work, so whilst having my shower I started dry heaving and then I fainted and then the diarrhea started which went on with very bad stomach pains for about 3 days with fevers and chills. I would wake up about 5 times a night with very bad stomach pans only to be relived when I went to the toilet. I pretty much had no energy and my body was exhausted. I went to the doctors where a stool sample was sent away. Published: June 04 ::

I had chronic diarrhea. I don’t have any vomiting or stomach cramps though, so I just wrote it off as stress. About a week after the diarrhea started, I developed sudden and severe arthritis in the feet and ankles. Apparently, this is an extremely rare side effect of salmonella infection. It took a while for the doctors to figure out what was going on with me, and unfortunately, the arthritis can be very long-lasting. Published: May 20 ::

My salmonella run-in started with chills, and I quickly developed severe stomach cramps (like labor pains). It was followed by diarrhea every 15 to 20 minutes for one full day. Today is the second day, and I still have chills, and my stomach is unsettled but much better. I don’t have a fever. I suspect it was from chicken salad from a deli or cleaning the cat litter box. I first had stomachache, a day later, I then had diarrhea and vomiting. I tried different tablets from the chemists but they did not help. I had no appetite whatsoever and whatever I eat or drank came back up. I lost 10 kilos in 6 days. I then went to the doctor and he sent me to hospital, where I had transfusions (total of 12 liters) and after 5 days antibiotics and tablets to stop the diarrhea. I now have a healthy appetite but am still testing positive for Salmonella after a month. Published: October 20 ::

I ate undercooked hamburger four weeks ago. I had diarrhea for two days, and now I have headaches and loss of balance in my legs. It is just like pins and needles going down my legs. Published: October 07 ::

Comment from: Carol, 25-34 Female (Patient)

I believe I have contracted salmonella from a python that we transported from its place of sale to home, it was in a cotton bag which I held on my lap with my hands holding the snake (through the bag) to keep it warm. Not long after arriving home I began to feel intensely nauseous and have stomach cramps. I have not been sick or had diarrhea as yet, but the symptoms I have are not characteristic of my usual poorly state symptoms. I have a headache and constantly raised temperature too. I have felt ill to the fact that the only relief is sleep for two and three quarter days now and wonder when it will end. Published: July 01 ::

What is colitis?

Colitis is inflammation of the inner lining of the colon and is associated with diarrhea, pain, and blood in the stool. There are numerous reasons for the colon to become inflamed including:

  • infection,
  • loss of blood supply to the colon,
  • inflammatory bowel disease, and
  • invasion of the colon wall with collagen or lymphocytic white blood cells.

Anatomy of the colon

The colon is a hollow, muscular tube that receives products of digestion from the small intestine and ultimately eliminates them from the body through the anus. The colon is located in the abdomen and has numerous sections that are named based on their location. Colitis can affect different sections of the colon.
