What were the symptoms of your chondromalacia patella?

I was only "diagnosed" with this a few days ago. However, the pain and issues started over 20 years ago while I was in the military. I have done arthroscopes, and even a lateral release to correct the issue. I was told over and over again "do xxx and the pain will stop". The doctor I saw a few days ago told me point blank that because I have done everything that can be done, I am just to live with it. I am 39 with 2 younger children (8 & 10) so this means that after the trip to the zoo / amusement park / etc. I am stuck with anti-inflammatory meds and heat / ice. Not a great life.

I had pain in my knees around the kneecap. If I sat in the same position for a long time then my knees would start to ache. The knee that hurt was swollen too. During physical activities my pain would increase. You can't do that much about it, but I heard that they had braces for it and you can always use pain killers.

Thank you all for sharing your experiences. My doctors have not been much of a help. I'm 47 and just found out I have CP. I'm getting tired of the pain but I can still walk to work (1 1/2 miles). Like others I am extremely stiff after sitting and it takes some time before I can move like a person with somewhat normal knees. I will try the things everyone else has tried and hopefully something will work for me. Like I will die fighting this before I turn to mush - Thanks for the positive attitude. It may be a disability but you just have to find ways to work with what you have.

I'm a female with C.P. at 51 I went to an ortho for pain. He did an MRI and said I had all symptoms of a meniscus tear and plica problems. Went in for surgery and he cleaned me up (so he said). I'm now 54 and still in pain! I have to sit after a walk around the store or block. This also has affected my IT bands and quad muscles. Every day I feel horrible so DO NOT have surgery!!! I don't know if plica excision is part of the blame or not. I get no relief from pain anti-inflammatory.

Pain radiated from the inside of my knee around to the back of my knee and up the back of my leg. Three weeks later the pain came up towards the inside of the front of my leg. It worsened as time went by and I cannot walk very long distances and was walking 2-3 miles a day before I fell.
